When people see a woodpecker with red coloring on the head they often assume they’re looking at a Red-headed Woodpecker. But they’re probably not, as this species is rather rare. They’re more likely seeing a Pileated Woodpecker, a Red-bellied Woodpecker, a Downy Woodpecker, or even a Yellow-bellied Sapsucker – all of which have red on the head and are much more common.

This morning, though, for the first time in a very long time, I DID see a Red-headed Woodpecker. And I was fortunate to have my camera with me. This is in Bemis Woods, Westchester, Illinois.
