Just a few yards away from the Killdeer featured yesterday and the ducklings from the day before, these Spotted Sandpipers patrolled the muddy shore along the West Branch of the DuPage River last weekend. These birds display a progressive attitude toward family life and gender roles: “females take the lead and males raise the young,” according to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. They’re smaller than and were occasionally bullied by the Killdeer, who possibly resents that their call is so much less annoying than its own. But that’s pure speculation.DSC_0204
